Phone batteries wear out with use. Battery health compares how much charge your battery can hold now with when it was new.
How to check it
- iPhone: open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health (on newer versions, Battery Health & Charging). Maximum Capacity is the figure to look at.
- Samsung: open the Samsung Members app and run the battery test under Diagnostics. Some models also show battery information in Settings, under Battery or Device care.
- Other Android phones: look in Settings, under Battery. Not every phone shows a health figure.
Signs it’s time for a new battery
- The phone doesn’t last a day it used to manage easily.
- It switches off suddenly, even when it shows charge left.
- It runs slowly, or gets hot during normal use.
- The screen or back is lifting. This can mean the battery has swollen. Stop charging it and bring it in.
