How to back up your phone before a repair

Simple steps for iPhone and Android, so nothing is lost.

Guide

Updated

It’s always worth backing up before a repair, in case anything happens to the phone or it stops working before you get it in.

iPhone

To iCloud:

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup.
  3. Turn on Back Up This iPhone and tap Back Up Now.

To a computer: connect the iPhone with a cable. On a Mac, open Finder and select the iPhone. On Windows, open the Apple Devices app or iTunes. Then choose Back Up Now.

Android

  1. Open Settings, then Google (on some phones, System), then Backup.
  2. Make sure backup is on and tap Back up now.

Photos backed up to Google Photos are saved separately: check backup is on in the Google Photos app. Samsung phones can also back up to Samsung Cloud, or to a computer with Smart Switch.

Before you bring it in

  • Make sure the backup finished: check the date and time of the last backup.
  • Remember your passcode. We may need it to test the phone after the repair.
